Free From Fines
Why is the library Free From Fines?
Going Free From Fines aligns with the Duluth Public Library’s strategic plan. One of our goals is to enhance current library services to better serve community needs. This includes exploring new strategies to increase access, service, and resources for under-resourced households. Overdue fines are punitive and can serve as a barrier, especially for people whose income is not high. Back in 2019, library staff and the library board recommended to City of Duluth leadership that the library stop charging daily overdue fines. City leadership agreed, and DPL became Free From Fines.
Do my library materials still have due dates?
Yes. Library materials are a shared community resource. They have a due date, and you are asked to return your items by the due date so they are available to others in the community. If no one is waiting for an item, you can renew it and continue to enjoy it for longer.
Do I still need to return items if there are no late fines?
Free From Fines does not mean anyone can keep materials as long as they want. You will be charged if you damage something or keep it 28 days past the due date (two weeks for Interlibrary Loans and Express Collections). After 28 days, the computer
system declares the item lost.
If I didn’t really lose these items, can I still bring them back?
Yes! The library’s computer system designates an item lost when it is not returned, even if the person who checked it out knows exactly where it is. If you’ve been billed for an item, we will take it back and remove the replacement charge from your account so you can check out materials again.
What will happen if I don’t return my materials on time?
If you have 5 or more overdue items or fees from lost or damaged items, you will be unable to check out anything or download any ebooks or audiobooks until the items are returned and any charges resolved.
Will I be charged for keeping something late?
No, as long as you return the item in good condition.
How many items can I check out?
You can have up to 100 items checked out on your card at one time.
Will I receive reminders about returning materials?
Yes. A reminder will be sent by email or text two days before an item is due. After that, the first overdue notice will be sent at 7 days overdue. A second notice will be sent at 14 days overdue, and a third notice will be sent at 21 days overdue. When an item is 28 days overdue, it is declared lost. A replacement charge is added to the patron’s account and a bill is sent. Interlibrary Loans and Express Collections (Bestseller, DVD, and Blu-Ray) are billed as lost at two weeks overdue. We encourage you to keep your contact information and notification preferences up to date. Talk to a library staff member to verify that you will get the notifications you want and need.
I always considered paying my fines as my library donation. How can I
donate to the library?
There are many ways you can help your library!
